What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

A content management system is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. The content managed may include computer files, image media, audio files, video files, electronic documents, and Web content.

This Page is using Joomla as a content management system. Joomla is written in PHP an uses MySQL as database. Using a CMS is more practical to show some web content than writing his own PHP code for example. It is much faster to bring some content online and you do not need to have so much knowledge and experience. And it is very easy to manage users (e.a. userrights) and to work with more people on the same project, even at the same time.
